Literary Inspiration: Relationships in Little Women Part 3 of 4

Little Women Book by Louisa May Alcott
Picture
Little Women is a piece of literature that has had a profound effect on me for years; the release of the 2019 film only heightened my love for it and thus propelled me to write a literary analysis of Alcott's 1868 novel. It's strange that I haven't written a song about it yet, but I guess that my creativity was channeled into a much different sort of writing. Please enjoy "Relationships in Little Women," an essay in which I fervently defend the end game relationships of both Jo and Amy. This is the third part of a four part series. Please click to read part 1 and part 2.

**The first picture above shows me standing next to a 19th century baker's table used on the set of the Little Women 2019 movie. It wound up being picked up by my aunt and uncle and now makes its home in their kitchen. The second photo is the same table on set in the movie.

Open Mics

méabh stanford performing phoebe bridgers and originals as Ventnor Coffee Open Mic
Recently, I’ve been attending open mics a local coffee house has been hosting. Just as a way to connect with crowds again and get my face and name out there. I’ve been going with a friend and we both plan to continue performing there. So far, I’ve performed both covers (mostly Phoebe Bridgers) and originals. The crowds are never large— I think the highest number of people thus far has been around 15-17— and this, counterintuitively, makes performing harder. It’s much easier to sing an original song when the faces of the people watching you aren’t ten feet in front of you. It’s a lot easier to feel the separate sets of fifteen eyes on you than one hundred. I think that performing for a small crowd is ten times harder because of the intimacy, especially when a majority of those audience members are fellow musicians and are adept enough in their craft to hear mistakes in mine. There is such a difference between playing on the Ocean City Boardwalk for hundreds of people a night versus a small coffee shop. In these small venues you become more aware of the fact that people are actively judging you. The pressure is on to play perfectly; this doesn’t occur while playing for tips in OC.

"i can still hope" Song Lyric Dissection

i can still hope song lyrics by méabh stanford indie pop romeo and juliet
This song was basically written on the premise of Romeo and Juliet with a twist. Same star-crossed lovers deal, except this time, the love is unrequited on the part of who is representing Romeo’s character. The narrator, who represents Juliet, laments and self-deprecates and wishes that her Romeo would love her back.

méabh stanford and Soulful Intellect
My EP, "make it be me" is out! Thank you for celebrating with me in person and online. Thank you to everyone who helped make this night possible! A special thank you to "Soulful Intelekt" for performing with me. You are amazing!

Firstly, thank you to my mother. It would be dumb to even try to describe how thankful I am for you, but (I could quote Yoda here, but I make myself out to be an even larger nerd later on) I will try. You watch out for me, protect me, you worked on this when I couldn’t, you made sure that I got what I came for. You fight for me when I am too tired to fight for myself. I would be so horribly lost without you and your unconditional love. You have always been my number one. Tá mo chroí istigh ionat. Thank you to my dad for coming on this journey with me and ensuring that I was happy every step along the way. You have always been a friend and know how to relax when I need to relax. I love you so much. Thank you to my whole family for being a great promo, design, and support group. I couldn’t have asked for more.

EP Cover Reveal!

méabh stanford make it be me ep cover art release indie pop inspired by books
I chose this image as a cover because I think that it encapsulates the overarching theme of the EP: beautiful pain. In the cover art, I’m by myself with only my reflection to accompany me; the colors are bright and pretty but I’m still lonely and uncomfortable with my singular presence. Nature surrounds me, suggesting that heartbreak and pain and loneliness are all natural emotions to feel. And in a whimsical, fairy-tale-esque dress, themes from literature are brought into the cover art as well.

Thank you, Stevi Leigh, for your amazing photography.

oh, Hyacinth part 1 Song Lyric Dissection

oh, hyacinth lyrics by méabh stanford apollo greek mythology

The myth of Apollo and Hyacinth is one that is heartbreaking and underappreciated. While there are a couple different versions of the myth, the one I based this and “oh, Hyacinth part 2” off of is the one that goes like this: Hyacinth was a Spartan prince and essentially everyone, including godly beings, found him beautiful and wanted to be with him. Among these gods were Apollo, god of music and light, and Zephyrus, the god of the western wind. Hyacinth wound up being in a loving relationship with Apollo, and this made Zephyrus incredibly jealous. One day, while Apollo and Hyacinth were discus throwing, Zephyrus, in a fit of jealousy, manipulated the wind so that Apollo’s discus hit Hyacinth in the head and killed him. Apollo was devastated, unable to live with the fact that his discus was the reason that the love of his life was dead. Apollo immortalized Hyacinth into a flower. Despite having multiple chances to, Apollo never married out of respect for Hyacinth. This song is from the perspective of Apollo and follows the story of their short but intense relationship.

Keira Knightley as Anna Karenina Song Lyric Dissection

keira knightley as anna karenina lyrics by méabh stanford tolstoy indie pop inspired by books
A kind of different format for this post! Today I’ll be explaining the lyrics to my song “Keira Knightley as Anna Karenina.” Just so there isn’t any confusion, I’ll write the line I’m explaining in one color and write the explanation for that line in the same color! Some lines might also not have explanations. Now, just to get into a general background: over the pandemic summer, I decided to watch Keira Knightley’s entire filmography (I regret to inform you all that this task was never accomplished). She stars mainly in period pieces and I was enchanted by the way they took the mundane and inserted dramatics and pain and love into the story. I wanted to know what it would feel like to be one of those characters, who seem to live for each other, who abandon all reason in the name of love. Of course, it’s all unrealistic. But that doesn’t make it any less romantic or beautiful. And I wanted to capture that feeling.
